HEALTHY HABITAT
Neighborhoods must provide the opportunity for citizens to have a healthy relationship with their surrounding ecosystem. This includes safe and welcoming streetscapes that encourage walking, biking, and appreciation of the natural environment. Eckington is very successful in this category. In addition to multiple Capital Bikeshare locations, there is a local nonprofit bike shop, and even a fitness bike gym. One of the most visible landmarks is the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) which runs along the west corridor along the train lines. In total, the MBT is a well maintained 8-mile trail that provides a vibrant route for commuters, and outdoor enthusiasts. At the center of the Eckington neighborhood is a gorgeous school outdoor playing facility that fosters numerous active team sports and is accessible by the public. In general, the Eckington street setbacks allow for a comfortably wide sidewalk, and an uncluttered neighborhood feel. This only enhances appreciation of the historic residential architecture and fosters pedestrian traffic growth for neighborhood businesses.
